Tell her she looks stupid! Come on 25? No one will ever take her seriously with that childish attitude.

Thumb sucking in adults is, perhaps, one of the most popular, secret habits around. Lots of adults indulge but few know about it due to its unfair associations with immaturity, emotional problems and so forth. Witness, here, the mostly biased replies to your inquiry. Fact is, unless your friend has the rare health problems associate with this quiet habit (mostly occlusal related) she should be considered fortunate because her habit, unlike the more "acceptable" ones of smoking, gambling, overeating, etc. is legal, effective in stress reduction, enables a better sleep, cheap, available and more.

The first thing I'd do is acquaint her with the website devoted to this subject: www.thumbsuckingadults.com
On this website she'll realize that she's not alone, not by a long shot. In fact, there are famous people who, likewise, indulge.

The next thing I'd do is back off from any criticism since it's probably based on old wives tales and misinformation. Support and accept your friend. That's what friends are for.

The last thing I'd do is give it a go myself since you may find that you're missing something! :)

From another adult thumb sucker....

Well sorry to say this but if she's 25 and still sucking her thumb then it will be hard to stop her. But tell her to IM me and I got something she can suck that will make her forget her thumb.

You should break her thumb. I'm sure she will not want to suck a splint with a bandage wrapped around it. That should get her over it.

Until SHE decides to quit, there's nothing you can do! This has to be her decision. You can let her know that this habit makes her look childish, unprofessional, etc. But the best thing you can do is to be supportive of her and let her know that if she ever does decide she wants to quit, you're there to help.

Accept who she is. You may have some disturbing habits she dosn't like, yet she dosn't mention them. Do the same for her. A true friend is one who loves another no matter what they do or look like.

tell her if she does that, she has to give you five bucks everytime she does that. If she likes to keep her money, eventually she'll stops.
If not, I suggest you pour really spicy salsa on her thumb and if she hates it, eventually she'll stop

WOW! Tell her that she needs to find another habit or something to take her mind off of it. I use to along time ago and it finally took me, myself and I to stop it.
