there is a 1:73,000,000 chance of a cot death occurring twice in the same family. Another source says cot death has an incidence of about one in a thousand, so the chance of natural cot death happening twice in a family is one in a thousand times one in a thousand, which is one in a million. there is also a family that lost 4 babies to cot death.
are you just curious or are you worried about your baby? If you are worried you can e-mail me I have allot of sites on the explanation and prevention of cot death. I am really afraid of it and have done my research on the topic.

Id have to find the article but i just read one a few months ago that was published in new zealand that suggested wrapping the mattress with a vinyl cover. The fumes released by the fire retardent treatment used to treat the mattress can actually cause cot death and its worse with an older mattress due to other factors such as dustmites and molds in the mattress. I would suggest giving it a shot along with proper fitting sheets and no stuffed animals in the bed etc... Also another point thats been shown to improve the odds is to not overdress a child. Being too warm is much more dangerous than a slight chill. A baby will tell you more readily that shes too cold than if too warm. I co slept with my child which is another option if youre not a heavy sleeper its been shown that a parent near the at night reduces the risk of cot death due to the natural movements of the parents keeping the child aware and breathing. Its not for everyone though but the new bedside co sleepers make it much safer than just the baby between the parents. I just dont like the idea of the baby being too far out of the room.

Goodluck and dont let past events scare you too much.

Actually, they are learning that many of the SIDS cases are actually other disorders that were not diagnosed at birth. My son suffers from a rare metabolic disorder that they believe can be the cause of many SIDS cases if the disorder goes undetected. His disorder is a fatty oxidation disorder that requires him to have some type of food every 4 hours or his body shuts down due to the poisons it produces. Since genetic disorders are inherited, there is a good chance that SIDS could run in a family if this is the reason for the death initially.

There is a push nationally to promote Newborn Screening tests so that children who have these disorders can be found and treated prior to a crisis.

The reality is that they are learning more and more every day about SIDS in an effort to prevent them from happening at all, especially twice in a family. But sadly, there is still the possibility that it could occur more than once if it was originally caused by an inherited condition.

No one knows what causes it. Just make sure that the sheets you use are really tight on the mattress. Also, if you are worried, buy the Angelcare baby monitor. It's a pad that goes under the mattress and senses the slightest movements from baby (including breathing). If the baby stops breathing for 20 seconds, it sets off an alarm on the parent unit. It provides great peace of mind!
