9 years and approximately 10 months.

Scenario -- the president dies after a mid-term election, and is succeeded by the vice president with less than two years left in the original term. The former-VP, now president, wins both of the next two general elections (+8 years).

There is some debate about whether the two-year-left limit applies from the point of inauguration or the point where the next general election is held, which is where the other two months go (10 years versus 9y 10m).

Mike O is right,10 years if the vice president is nominated by default(pres,Ford) he could have done 10 by doing the 2 ,4 year terms plus when Nixon resigned he got in two years by default( that doesnt count as a term)

10 years,

if they are VP and assume the role when the pres. leaves, if they have less than 2 years of their predecessor's term they are eligible for two of their own. but if more than 2 years remain then they can only do one.
