How does the media perserve the status quo of the political system?

The only real way the media preserves our political system's status quo is in rarely allowing candidates from parties other than the Democrat and Republican ones to speak at televised debates. Other than that, the media can't really be faulted for not covering the Green Party, for instance, as closely as the majors since smaller parties have so few members and the news value/importance is that much less.
