I received a few formulas like this one, Gross = ( Total hrs ) (rate ) + (Total - 40 ) (1.5 rate). in my spreadsheet i have hours ranging from 32-50 hours worked. with this formula, i seem to be getting only the gross pay for the people who have worked only 40 hours. For example, for one person I have 58.60 for rate and 45 hours they worked. with this formula i am getting 2644.5 My formulas have to be copied down and not re-entered. Can anyone tell me why i am not getting the same answer as the one my teacher provided on his spreadsheet which is 2783.50?

Sounds like you are not charging the overtime hours at a different rate.

Up to the first 40 hours they get their rate, 58.60. Beyond that they get time and a half while the first 40 are regular rate. That's likely the catch, when you have overtime, the regular rate is always 40 * rate, while the overtime is (hours - 40) * rate. You might need an if statement in a spreadsheet or in a program to calculate it, to cap regular hours at 40 if total hours is > 40.
