We would lose something with every little bump on the head. The gray matter helps to protect the part we use.

It might help to know where that question came from. (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he's going to tell you everything...)

It all started in the 1940s, shortly after the war. A Gestalt psychologist named Samuel Renshaw said we only *perceived* about 20% of our potential - that our eyes, for example, only saw 20% of what they were capable of.

There might be something to that, actually. But as for the untapped potential of the *brain*, that doesn't make much sense. Think in evolution terms for a second. Our ancestors got rid of their tails long ago, and appendixes are a relic of a bygone organ; why then would we cart a headful of mush? I don't really believe we use our brains any less than previous generations. (Dorner's point here.)

But let's humor the notion. I once tried to figure this out through some basic math. Brains are made of neurons; those cells have axons for sending impulses, dendrites for receiving them.

There are 100 bn neurons, and for simplicity's sake, let's say there's one dendrite and one axon for each cell.

Brains work by electrical impulses, so cells fire in various combinations. How many possible combinations are there?

1x10^9 X 1x10^9 = 1x10^18. And that's not even figuring time into the equation! Looked at this way, we haven't even begun to use our brains.

I have no doubt that there are tons of things we haven't figured out about the brain and mind, but a notion like that "only use 20%" is just facile. My unsolicited advice is to find a better way to do things, not to try and mathematize our mental potential, and not to worry if we've reached the limit yet.

Because that's what the question seems to be about: limits. Henry Ford put it very nicely:

"None of our men are 'experts.' We have most unfortunately found it necessary to get rid of a man as soon as he thinks himself an expert - because no one ever considers himself expert if he really knows his job. A man who knows a job sees so much more to be done than he has done, that he is always pressing forward and never gives up an instant of thought to how good and how efficient he is. Thinking always ahead, thinking always of trying to do more, brings a state of mind in which nothing is impossible. The moment one gets into the 'expert' state of mind a great number of things become impossible."

We would all be ambidextrous. No left handers no right handers. We'd be able to do everything with either one.Because we would be using both sides of our brains for everything. We would not need sleep because we could effectively shut off different parts of our brains at different times of the day. We would benefit more from school and learning. We wold be a more peacefull race of people because we would be able to see consequences before we act. There would be no war because there would be a collective consciencesness. We would be a United planet.

It's because the brain requires too much to run. We actually do use the entire brain when we're first born, and then quickly kill of all the parts of the brain that prove to be useless, till by 3 years old, we've killed of a good 70% of it. I guess there wasn't really anything too important to think about.

We don't use 100 percent of our brain AT ONCE because different parts are used for different things. Anything else you've heard is probably a myth.

I think God left room for the future evolution of our brains. When we start using 100%, we will have heightened understanding, intuition, compassion and there won't be any more war. We will start taking care of our planet and each other. People will act out of wisdom and love instead of hatred, prejudice and ignorance.

every body uses 100% of their brain when they really need to, we just cant achieve everything because our brain isn't big enough to hold too much information before its ready. its like muscle in our body, we cant pick up heavy wights even if we used every single muscle in our body, but if we trained it then they will get stronger and we can lift the same amount of wight that was too heavy before and even more. you could say we don't always train our brain enough.

It's true we don't use 100% of our brain...Maybe if we did we would find the solution to violence, war, and having a government that will give us the cures for AIDS, CANCER..they just keep them to make money. IF they used their full potential they would find more logical and safe ways to make money.

LOL...If we all use 100% of our brain, we will still be dumb, but if each of us use 100% of the brain, the answer will be different.

Now..tell me, which is which?
Just kidding.

1. The world would be a far better place.

2. We'd all be psychic.

3. We'd all be able to move things just by thinking about it.
