What is the proper, exact definition of African American literature?

Unless this is your own definition, please give me your source. Thanks!

I was asking this because I wasn't sure if it was literature written about African Americans (doesnt necessarily have to be written by an African American) or literature that is written by African Americans. Can anyone clarify this?

Most of it details or explores the African-American experience: What life is like for African-Americans, slavery, cultural affairs, socio-economic or political matters, anything that deals with the black perspective of life in America.
