But it seems like whenever O'Shea comes in. He never plays centerback. He always comes in for midfielders.

well, o'shea scored recently and so has carrick, but o'shea is very versatile, wen rooney was injured o'shea was the sub. just becuz u dont score doesnt mean u are mor defensive. if u are somparin them to say other centre mids...say...lampard. its different, carrick or o'shea dont take free kicks, giggs and ronaldo do, which already cuts their chaances of scoring, and they usually feed it to giggs and ronaldo to score or feed to rooney

Yeah, but I still think O'Shea is best in central defence. Carrick does seem to be a defensive midfielder although would like to see him in a more attacking position.

Carrick is a defensive midfielder, but he isn't one of the best in the world, like somebody replied before me. That would have to go to Gattuso, Vieira, Makelele...

O'Shea is more of a central midfielder, where he goes up to attack more, but plays defense too. They're both pretty crap though honestly.

Carrick is a holding defensive midfielder and a very good one, possibly one of the best in europe. His Job is to get the ball off the back 4 and start attacks and often he just plays simple but affective balls. But he can also play brillant long assist passes.
O'Shea isn't particularly good, but yes he is a defensive midfielder. His job is to cover the ground protect the defence and get tackles in. Basically the donkey's job. Once he wins the ball he gives it to the good players. Of which United have a lot.

Carrick is, though how much defending he does for the _whole_ game is disputable. O'Shea can play everywhere. John O'Shea is the second coming of Christ: the Scousebusting edition.
