I like first editions from certain authors, Stephen King for example, but often times I just want to read the book for the story. More importantly, is the story the same?

Whether a book is first edition or not matters only if you plan to try and make a profit off it later. Really, if you just want to read the book for the story, and plan to do it only once, don't buy it at all. Go to the library and check it out there for free. If you plan to keep this book a long time and think you will be rereading it often, buy hardcover, they last longer. If you think you will only be keeping it to read once in a while, think about buying paperback, they're cheaper.

The stories are the same. If you plan to keep the book forever and want it to perhaps appreciate in value, by all means buy a first edition. The best thing to do to keep them from being expensive is to keep up with when books by your favorite authors are being published--then be the first one at the bookstore to buy it.

don't buy it at all, just wait for it at the library. it doesn't really matter if it's the first edition at all, most of the time the storyline stays the same. just make sure you don't get an abridged version.

Yes, it's a very good idea. Don't worry, the story will be intact. And if you take good care of your copy, it could become a good investment as a potentially rare book:

buy the first editon because as a book gets re-printed over and over a lot of stuff gets taken out.
