I will not recommend any particular manufactures DVD, As what I might like may not be available in your area. However if you desire to to get a lot of information, to include 'Failure Rate', You might be interested the looking at this site.
This 'Site' is a free download, It will give you more information on the DVD disk than the 'Manufacture' advertises . It works very well with All Types and Formats of DVD. It does not work on Cd's

I have yet to run into bad disc except one totally unbranded -RW for $1 that could write except the all-important TOC, although I had problem with Sony's disc before however it wasn't with DVD at all, but it was also with writing to TOC.

Plextor is usually cited as the best quality brand name, but don't let brands be a factor in deciding between optical drives, they're pretty much all the same in build quality no matter what brand it is.

i have the best luck with office depot brand dvd's. and they seem to be on sale alot more then the name brand ones are.

Any brand that has a recognizable name is good.

Also, you want to make sure you are using media that is madeto handle the speed of your burner. you really dont want to have a 24x burner, and buy 4X media.. it takes forever
