that depends on what you listen to in general, I've been playing bass for 4 years now and it has made some impacts in my life, you begun to appreciate music more and you will wish to play everything that sounds good to you. besides that, if you are looking forward to play grunge or any modern rock, i would study some "Nirvana", "Red Hot Chili Peppers" (Start off with their latest songs) , as for Hip-Hop & R&B, old school "Dr.Dre" "2Pac" "Lauryn Hill", for Metal, start off with "Metallica", Classic Rock "Led Zeppelin" "Black Sabbath" "Pink Floyd" "The Doors". and Jazz is whole another step that requires some skill before learning.

I would also suggest you to have an Idol that would motivate you to learn how to play, there are greats like Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report) [Jazz], Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck) [Fusion], Les Claypool (Primus) [Rock/Other],

I'm not sure if you mean what specific instrument is best for beginners or where to start learning.

As far as instrument, I'd say just go to guitar center, talk to an employee and keep your limit under $500. Don't pay a lot for your first bass until you know you can keep with it. If you have a store that sells used instruments around you, I'd check there too. You can often get very good deals, and sometimes even haggle the price.

As for how to start learning, my first suggestion is a teacher. Every town has places that will teach you to play music, I'm sure you could find someone to teach you. If you're on a tight budget, however, I recommend a simple theory book specifically for bass guitar. You may be bored with theory at first, I definately was, but it's the gateway to learning a lot in a very short period of time. As long as you're getting books, I also recommend specifically the Bass Tab White Pages published by Hal-Leonard. It's got 200 songs of varying difficulty and will give you something to play.

Well, someone will tell you this but I want to be first. You "feel" the bass more than hear it. In combination with the guitar, the notes are more profound. Like a collective note.
