because you have a video card that uses shared memory. the memory that you don't see (i.e. 958mb) is being used to bolster your video memory

missing ram would be alocated to video memory as well as any memory holes or special process being preformed in the bios, adjusting the agp apture in the bios may get that ram back , but will also seriously decrease your shared video quality, in my lap top the agp apture is at 256 mb as I would rather loose the ram to the video card , then to have cruddy looking video. this is the same case as when you buy a 100gb hard drive, you can physically only use around 93-95gb's of it. yes, you paid for 1024mb of memory, but your system, just running, will use some of that, so that will leave you with the 958 you see. it's really not that much you're losing.

It could be you have an integrated graphics card, if so the card uses some of the ram, and that could be why your seeing a decrease in ram.

How long have you had the computer? It may have gotten old. RAM decreases over time. Mine used to have 1GB now it only has 0.99GB.
