Shin splints occur most commonly as a chronic running injury. It is damage to the Tibialis Anterior muscle which works to slow the top of the foot down as your foot hits the ground. Basically, because the muscle is being worked too much, it begins to pull the periostium (on the muscle attachment) away from the bone.

This muscle needs rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ice can help initially. To keep this problem from reoccurring you should have your gait analyzed, focusing on a heel to toe roll as the foot strikes the ground, as poor running mechanics are most commonly the culprit. Propper running shoes can make a world of difference, also.

Do you stretch the front calf muscle before running? But it can be more complicated than that...if you have compartment syndrome (that would be like a leg equivalent to carpal tunnel of the wrist.) then you might need surgery to correct it? See an orthopedic doctor. here is a link on wikipedia.

You need not only suport, but shoes with a very good shock absorbing system. You may also need to stay off your feet for a little while to allow the bones to completely heal.
