She'll find it soon enough. both of my girls did exactly the same thing, yet Junior never showed any inclination. My eldest is 6 and still does when she feels the need, but never in public and her teeth are fine. Don't sweat it, just give lots of cuddles when needed.

Hey
I can see why you may want your baby to suck her thumb. But firstly can i ask does she cry in the night for no reason? Ie after you have fed her, changed her, sang to her etc?
If she seems comfortable just falling asleep when she is tired without a dummy or sucking her thumb then she will not need to and there no point in forcing her.
Babies either want some type of comfort when they falling asleep such as a dummy, some are self comforters-ie they suck their thumb or jst do a sucking action with their mouth that is so small that you cant even see sometimes.
If for some reason she is crying alot and feeding her, changing her has not helped try singing and rocking her to sleep (standing up in her room) or lie her on your lap and rock gently from side to side. While doing this bend your little finger (which should be clean) and just rub the the bottom or top her gums with your knuckle. You might find that she will hold on to your finger and jst suck on your knuckle until she falls asleep, she should stay like this till her next feed, which should be after about 2 hours (claculating by her age).
What I am trying to say that all babies are very different. I have two friends and there is only a month between their babies. One wanted a dummy and had teeth very early trying to chomp at everything, while the other just wanted to suck his thumb on occasion (her mother is finding it very difficult to feed him now as hes a year old and will suck his thumb between each spoonfull!)
So I guiess just leave her be and just see how she gets on at this age let your baby guide you into what she wants, you can tell her what you want her to do after shes 1!!!!!!!!! hahahah
Anyway I hope this helps
Please email me if you have any other questions

why do you want your newborn to resemble bugs bunny in a few years, sucking your thumb is disgusting not to mention unhygienic,at least you can take a dummy away i gave my lil boy a dummy because he was constantly wanting to suck it took a few attempts to keep it in his mouth but he soon got the hang of it and there is no way at 8 week old your child will throw a paddy if you think that its a paddy just wait until she turns 2 or three years old when temper tantrums start have fun

Dont force them, babies that suck there thumbs usually start inside the womb so they already know what its there for..If they dont want it to force it upon her. I have been sucking my thumb since right out of my mothers tummy and sucked it until i was 23*. my sister stopped sucking hers at 18 and my other sister still sucks hers and she is 18. u said u know of the dental issues so no need to tell u about those. Try giving her a pacifier if anything...dont force though

I LOVE thumb sucking. I've had two thumb suckers and I think it's great. So far no dental problems, and one of them is 7 years old! Unfortunately, you really can't make her suck her thumb, but if she's already showing a preference for the thumb over the pacifier, she's on her way. She'll get it at about the 3 month mark if she's like my girls.

I think if she was going to suck her thumb she would have already found it.
Our daughter found her hand in the womb and had a small scab from that and her pediatrician already said she would be right handed and find her thumb. She was about a full week old when that happened.
It's just one of those things she may or may not and would have likely started to find it by now.
(try a little blanket or the pacifier)

She will suck it when she is ready no other way to tell you how. As for the detal complications unless its prolonged sucking {well beyond a few yrs of age} nothing to worry about most babies do it. My son did it for a month he'd cry and in went his thumb for comfort.. 8 weeks is a bit young I doubt she's aware she has that thumb yet

You can't force her to do it. If she is going to she will have to learn on her own. What about a pacifier? 2 of my 3 kids have sucked the middle 2 fingers on their right hand. The other took a pacifier.

if your baby wants to suck her thumb, she will find her thumb herself, my daughter did at 10 weeks old, fortunately, she broke the habit when she was one, but don't force your daughter to suck her thumb, some people still suck their thumb at the age of 21, I know someone who was sucking his thumb in his 40's.

Have you tried giving her a blanket for comfort, many babies use this sort of thing, but just let your baby find her own way.

you are trying to encourage thumbsucking? It'll be hard to get her to stop when she's older.

Anyways, she'll probably figure it out on her own. She'll do whatever makes her comforted. It doesn't have to be the thumb. Mine never sucked her thumb but figured out how to suck on her arm, which as the same comforting effect.
