My daughter is 7 months loves storebought applesauce. So I wanted to make my own but want to make sure she was okay with the apple type we brought. So I ate one let her lick and suck on it and she loves the taste.

My husband saw me letting our daughter taste my apple is worried that it's too much sugar especially when you are supposed to dilute apple juice with toddlers so they don't rot their teeth. He's fine with storebrought apple sauce because he feels that the company must have done its research to ensure that sugar content is okay for babies.

We both prefer her to eat homemade stuff but I am worried about the sugar, Is he right?

PS, he's fine with fresh mangos and bananas, we are just wondering about apples

Anything fresh is always better! "An Apple a Day" as the old saying goes is indeed good for your health. Apples are truly a wonder fruit and are also one on your infants first foods.

One of the most important nutritional components of Apples is that they contain two types of fiber; insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Both the insoluble fiber in apples and their soluble fiber pectin help relieve constipation (thus helping to prevent diverticulosis and colon cancer. The insoluble fiber works like roughage, while the soluble fiber (pectin), which is found primarily in the skin, acts as a stool softener.

~~Apple Purée/Applesauce Recipe~~

1/2 cup water
5 medium apples, cored, peeled, and diced
pinch of cinnamon if desired

Combine all ingredients in large saucepan and bring to a gentle boil.
Lower heat and simmer until "sauce" like consistency is achieved; ensure that you check on the liquid level!

Mash, strain and puree the resulting "sauce" as needed
May be frozen in ice cube trays for baby food cubes!

BTW the "rotten teeth" come from babies who constantly suck on a bottle of apple juice while teething! They have to have milk and water! An apple does not have to sugar content that apple juice has!

Honey let your child eat homemade applesauce if you want it doesnt have the sugar he is worried about. It has natural sugars and one full apple has less natural sugars in it then that baby apple juice from concentrate. BTW do you think that store bought applesauce takes out the sugar? They dont!

If you want to make it yourself go for it, if you make it yourself you know exactly what goes into it and it won't have any of the added sugar and preservatives (that could possibly be dangerous for babies) that are in the store bought varieties. I feed my son fresh fruit and vegetables, not only do I think it's probably better for him than the canned stuff you buy, but it works out to be cheaper as well.

Homemade is safe and actually better for your child. Not only is there more sugar in store bought but that goes for many store bought baby foods

I make all my sons food. With apples, i cook them until they are slightly mushy, then puree them. No preservatives...nothing. There isn't too much sugar in apples for her. Try this website for the cold hard facts.

Homemade foods are much healthier for her than store bought. Just remember, fruit is very high in sugar(fructose). You really need to watch how much she is eating.
