Unconventional thinking, "thinking outside the box" may earn you a reputation as a rabble rouser, a trouble maker, or a strange bird. Some may even classify you as "gifted".

Many famous individuals were unconventional in their thinking, otherwise there would have been few political, educational, or scientific breakthroughs in the past. We need unconventional thinkers to move forward.

Avoid confrontations at school, work, etc. with those you know can affect your progress; i.e, teachers who assess your grades, supervisors who evaluate you and may have an impact on any promotions. These situations may not seem "fair"; but, as an "unconventional thinker" you will be scrutinized, even ostracized, by the majority of society.

Without innovation, you'll get left behind. Technologies change, tastes and preferences change, the economy changes...what worked in the past won't compete going forward.

So you need outside-the-box thinkers to dream up new possibilities. But at a certain point it's time to put strategy, resources and motivation behind what you have right now. You can't keep changing things forever without committing to a business plan to position yourself in the marketplace. Otherwise, you'll abandon good ideas before they can follow through in development and marketing.

Also, it's bad to think outside the box if you're not willing to be hardnosed evaluating your ideas. Ideas need to be measured against reality so they can be improved until they are ready for the marketplace. What if the market doesn't want something new? Thinking outside the box for its own sake, just because it's more exciting, is unlikely to lead anywhere.

Perhaps a degree of estrangement from the values lauded by convention and the social ties of convenience. I think it would be worth considering outside the box thinking as bad when confronted with a situation whereby the entire world is incorrect in it's thoughts and You find Your self attached to what You think as correct.

I don't think it's bad to ever think outside the box, but there are going to be certain social situations where doing it might get you in a lot of trouble. I would research exactly what your legal position would be before you share your most fascinatingly wierd ideas and political thoughts about civil rights in front of psychiatrists and peace officers. Sharing your opinions in these cases may not be beneficial to your freedom or well being.

Elementary, Middle and High School-Once you get past those levels in life, unconventional thinking is accepted. LOL. Public education wants everyone to think inside the box.
