After 16 years working for the same company, I am looking for another job and planning on quitting my current one soon. Is there a law in the state of Massachusetts that requires employees to give a 2-week notice? When I get my new job, I don't even plan on giving them any time at all. I just want to get the heck out of there.

Can I do that?

Like someone stated before, be careful. Since you've been working at this company for 16 years, you're definitely going to want it as a reference. If you burn that bridge and have to omit using it on future applications, you're going to have some explaining to do as to why you have no employment history for the past 16 years.

I would definitely stick it out for the next two weeks after giving them a proper notice. And definitely leave on good terms, no matter how difficult it might be. Good luck to you!

You don't have to give them a notice, but you should if you plan on using the company as a reference. I'm guessing you're not under contract with them and are an "At-Will" employee, so if you don't need them for a reference, just say au revoir when you get the other job.

It's always a good idea to give 2 week notice. It is what may make you eligible or ineligible for rehire. I do believe that is something they can share with prospective employers -
1. yes, they worked here
2. they worked here... (the dates)
3. yes, they are eligible for rehire

you can do it but it will not look good on your record, don't burn your bridges, you don't know whats down the road.
