We have a situation here where 3 people - one each in Scotland, Ireland and England all wish to get access to maintain and modify one database.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to the best way to do this?

Thanks very much for your comments. We are a charity, the database is from a specific 'church database' company. We all have a home computer.

I assume the file would be kept on the server and then it would be downloaded, giving a message - polite or otherwise if someone else was using it.

Yes, it can certainly work, but need a lot more details to offer specific answers. In general, the easiest way would be to equip all 3 sites with VPN routers. The new Linksys devices are easy to set up and do a good job.

Guess a lot depends on what type of database, If you use MySql you just configure it to accept connections from any of the machines or use a web interface like phpMyAdmin and any and all can admin and modify.
