The entire purpose of the Initiative is still cloaked in Mystery. However the very definition of Dharma may shed some light on this mystery at least in part.
Dharma is basically an Eastern Philosophy that mankind can somehow reach perfection by making all the right choices in their life. Similar to the idea of Karma.
It seems that somehow this Island our friends have found themselves on has unleashed some mystical power which causes anyone within it's midst to face their demons until they gain victory over them.
The Initiative may have been studying this phenomena, what happened to them remains a mystery as well.

They are a group of individuals that study the magnetic (and other) anomalies that had been discovered on the island that presented themselves through strange events and occurrences.
Evidently they have a fail-safe mechanism that either stops controlling the islands power, or it exists to destroy the island itself, to protect the world from the island.
