"A Brief History of Time: The Updated and Expanded Tenth Anniversary Edition" by Stephen Hawking is probably the best book you can find on this subject along a wide variety of other mysteries of space and physics. He goes into detail on why and how things works and explains it in a way that allows us to understand it. He has a great chapter on Space-Time and what is it. Also, he goes through and explains formations of black holes and how they work. It's an amazing book and an excellent selection for your topic.
