This question should be on the Y!A home page for its historical significance. Organization and government in the same sentence? Wow.

I concur with the first answer. The mechanics are different in every state but the basic shape is the same.

It depends on the state.

Each state (in the US) has its own state constitution, that defines how it works. Most have a single head of the state executive branch (usually called the Governor). All have some form of judicial system, including a state supreme court (though not all states call it that). All have some form of legislature, though some are two-chamber and some are one-chamber.

So, it varies significantly.

That depends on each state. Do a search on your particular state.
