The best anti virus is Nod32 but its not free, its distributed by a company called Eset from their website. Never download it from any other source.

Theres Bitdefender and Avast. If you already have AVG you can use the free Bitdefender 8 as a backup, because it doesn't run in the background. You use it when you want to scan to double check you haven't missed anything.

You only install 1 anti virus that runs in the background, like AVG. Don't install a second without uninstalling AVG. They'll conflict.

I have used bullguard and bitdefender 8 professional. Both do not use heavy amount of system resources, and noting some benefits of bullguard:-

Bullguard:
can get free 60 day trial on their website of all features

It comes with an online backup feature, which is big enough to back treasured photos

Low use on system resources

Downloads essential and small update files in the background, and also checks up to every hour for these.

Bitdefender 8

Low use on system resources

Silent downloads which work in the same way as bullguard

Easy to use interface

Active Virus Shield is free and uses the Kaspersky AS program which is the best available. Look at these Independent test results:

My preferences......1) NOD32 but it is not free 2) Grisoft's AVG......It is free, efficient, and real easy to use. 3) AVAST......Also free, and easy to use.

Unlike Spyware/Malware software (where more is better) Never put more than one AV on your computer at a time.

BY ALL MEANS, STAY AWAY FROM NORTON AND MCAFEE!!!!!!
