It's a verse in the bible:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

Those who say 3:16 refers to the bible, are partly right, however it is not intended to mean any particular part of the bible.

During a match with Jake the Snake, who was a chrisitan, Austin said "Austin 3:16 says I just kicked your ***", so he made it up to sound like it was in the bible.

Back at the King of the Ring 1996 Stone Cold faced Jake "the snake" Roberts(who was now in a "holy" gimmick and he would always read from the bible and so on)So in the finals of the Tournament Austin beat Roberts and then came one of the most famous promos in all of wrestling..........

"The first thing I want be done is to get that piece of crap out of my ring! Don't just get him out of the ring, get him out of the WWF, because I've proven son, without a shadow of a doubt - you ain't got what it takes anymore. You sit there and you thump your bible and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere. Talk about you Psalms, talk about John 3:16... Austin 3:16 says: 'I've just whipped your ***'!! All he's gotta do is buy himself a cheap bottle of Thunderbird, and try to dig back some of that courage, he had in his prime. As the King of the Ring, I'm serving notice to every one of the WWF superstars. I don't give a damn what they are, they are all on the list, and that is Stone Cold's list, and I'm fixing to start running through all of them. As far as this championships match is considered, son, I don't give a damn, if it's Davey Smith or Shawn Michaels. Steve Austin's time has come, and when I get the shot, you are looking at the next WWF champion, and that's the bottomline - cause Stone Cold said so!" (after defeating the Bible-quoting Jake Roberts in the 1996 King Of The Ring final)

Austin defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts in a match After the match, Austin cut a promo during his coronation which viciously mocked Jake's reformed lifestyle, because he was a christian telling Roberts:

:"You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere! Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16 ... Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ***!"

The Bible, John Chapter 3, verse 16:

"For God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes on Him should have everlasting life."

People carrying signs with John 3:16 on them are trying to spread the message. Other "3:16"s poke fun at them.

Its a passage from the bible... Psalm 3:16. Jake Roberts was wrestling Austin and at the time he (Jake) was using a religious gimmick and he used to quote passages from the bible. Austin said something along the lines of, you talk about your Psalm 3:16 and all that crap, well Austin 3:16 says I just kicked your ***.... And so Austin 3:16 was born.

John 3:16 is the Bible quote. It means that if you believe in Jesus you will go to heaven. People twist that into whatever they want to make it, unfortunately. I'm so not a religious nut. Just wanted you to have the info.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
