When the founding fathers created the USConstitution, they visualized the House of Representatives as the branch of the Congress that would represent ordinary people. Remember, it was not until 1913 and the XVII th Amendment, that the US Senate members were elected by the public. Before that, the Senators were considered to be representing each individual state, not the people as a whole, and they were elected by their state legislature, not by the popular vote of the citizens.

I guess you could say now that the whole Legislative Branch, the Congress (House AND Senate) is supposed in some way to represent ordinary people.

I like the quote from Harry Truman, who said that, because the president (and vice-president) are the only people in the government who are elected by all the people, and the president should represent all the people in the country, not sectionalism, or special interests. But we know that even the president is not directly elected--he is selected by the Electoral College, not by the popular vote.

The House of Representatives.

As originally envisioned by the founding fathers, the House of Representatives was directly elected by the people to represent them.

The Senators were appointed by the states to represent the interests of the 50 states. Then an amendment was later passed that made Senators directly elected too. So now, essentially the Senators no longer represent the state, just a larger base of people.

In my mind, this was a mistake. The founding fathers had it right and it should not have been monkeyed with.

Originally it was the House of Representatives fashioned after Britain's House of Commons. The Senate (comparable to the House of Lords) were to represent the general interests of their state.

We citizens are responsible for making our feelings, desires and concerns known by writing, calling or emailing our congressmen. Most people, however, don't even know who their congressmen are or how to contact them. It is also our duty to know the candidates before voting and then voting in every election. If you don't vote, don't gripe.
