I was just outside in my backyard when my mother noticed a brown and white snake with stripes from its hed to the end of its body. Can anyone tell me if this snake is poisonous and what precautions I should take?

Where do you live? How big is it? Do you have a photo? Without more information no one can narrow down what kind of snake you have, sorry. The best precautions to take are as follows:

Get a field guide to your local snakes. If you've seen one snake, chances are, you'll see more, a field guide will allow you to identify your snake with certainty and determine whether it is dangerous or not.

If it is a nonvenomous snake, there are no precautions to take.

If it is venomous, most likely it will avoid you, you are not a food item.

If you call a local wildlife removal company, they may come help you, but most likely the snake would either have to be out in the open or contained... think of the benefits before you get rid of it.

Oh, and if I were to guess, I'd say it was a ribbon snake, but I don't like guessing.

No 90% of all snakes are beneficial and eat a variety of pests

if the head is wide
or/and the fangs are hinged it is poiseness
