Yes the dogs are healthy and given a full check over by vet before the race. They are not mistreated or tortured.

Some dogs die in the race, Some Horses die in the British grand national, Some greyhounds die in greyhound racing.

There are a lot of sports that used animals in this way but all the animals in these sports are treated fairly and rightly.

These animals have a great life with everything given to them if they need a operation they have it straight away no matter the cost, they are given the best food and the best sleeping areas.

In the wild they wouldn't last half as long as they would if they were being looked after by trainers. Some simple in the wild like sprained ankle could kill a dog because they would not be able to hunt and kill their food.

Yes.

The race is decades old. The dogs are required to go through vet checks and certs before even running the race. The handlers treat their dogs well and don't abuse them from what I see.
