I would say embroidery is a general term which includes different embroidery techniques and one of these is cross stitch. Embroidery includes crafts such as cross stitch, tapestry, and any decorative craft done with needle and thread. Cross stitch uses thread to create the whole pattern using only crosses, half crosses and quarter crosses. Embroidery may also include other stitch types such as french knots, etc in the pattern.

The only similarities I can come up with is , they both use embroidery thread and embroidery hoops. Cross stitch is a two step stitch, which is repeated throughout the whole design pattern. Embroidery can, and often does, involve many different stitches in one design.

They both use thread and fabric? ;-)

I really enjoy both but I find that my cross stitch tends to be more regimented because I don't design my own.

I've only done embroidery on my crazy quilt projects and my embroidery tends to be more free form. I think for me its a bit more of a creative effort.
