I own an HP and the drive is a,
HL-DT-ST-DVD-RW GWA-4080n, it will not recognize any blank DVDs when I try to burn video to then, but it will burn then to blank CDs. On the side it states that it is a DVD-rewritable drive, but I still can't burn to any blank DVDs. I have updated the driver, and still nothing. Any help??

you probably have the wrong type of dvd-r discs. There are dvd-r discs dvd+r discs and dvd-ram discs. Consult your manufacturer's handbook to find out which type can be used with your laptop. If you use the wrong kind you will have the results that you've been having.

Well, I don't want to sound like a knucklehead, but if you are using a rewritable DVD disk, one usually has to format it first.
Also make sure that you do in fact have a DVD burning program installed, not just a CD burner. The DVD burning program will also install the required DVD codecs. A freeware one is here: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Sometimes one has to update their firmware on the burner first before the DVD half of it will work, (for some unknown reason). Before you do that check out the first two items that I mentioned in this response.

OOPs, I see that your drive is a dual layer job. You might want to make sure your burner program is capable of doing dual layer drives. I think there's one out there somewhere called 'DVD Next Copy' that does dual layers, but it's not free.

Your drive should have come with capable burning sofware, but who knows.
