If you put twice as much oil in as is recommended? And will all be well if you drain out the excess before starting the car?

As long as you didn't start it, no problem. Just drain the excess out.

As stated above, you can drain the engine and set the oil to the correct level. No harm will come of it. If you were to attempt to start the car with that much oil, you can blow out seals as the pressure would be too much. Depending on what engine it is, with this much oil in it, your pistons would be sitting in oil and cranking will push the oil up past the rings into the combustion chamer. Nothing good will come of it.

Nothing will happen as long as you don't crank it, but you do not get any protection in any other areas of the motor. You need to drain to proper level, crank and/or run to circulate the oil, shut it off, then add the extra oil if you wish, but it doesn't do anything. But above all, you must remember to DRAIN before cranking!!

It's only a problem if you started it. The crankshaft would have churned it into foam.
