I do not want to just come right out and tell her that it is hideous, because I do not want to upset her. Although, I think most would agree that October is not meant to be a child's name and if she just has to name a kid this it would be better to name the boy October and call him Toby, then to name a girl October and have no nickname.

Tobi can be a nickname for a girl too. I used to work with a really cute, popular girl named Tobi.

But I agree, October is kind of a bad name for a baby girl. Not very feminine. Maybe suggest Octavia or Olivia if she likes O names.

You can tell her that you don't personally care for the name, but that's it. It's her decision. I think October is fine for both sexes, and Toby or Tobi would make a great nickname. I went to school with a girl named January, and her nickname was Jan or Jani. She was pretty and popular. I also new a girl in college names Toby, she was pretty and popular too.

Why October? Does that have a special meaning? Did someone die in October or was born in October?
How about April, May, orJune.... at least those are the usual "month" names.... Suggest it for a middle name! Don't be rude or anything to her, just explain it nicely i guess... A girl named october might get nicknamed "Octy" or "Octopus" or something like that in school....

Well, I've definitely heard worse names, Nevaeh comes to mind, but anyway... You can't tell your friend the name she picked for her child is hideous. Perhaps you can be more diplomatic. Point out that there's really no shortening of the name, except Ock, which sounds ugly, or maybe she'll get teased in school. Ultimately, it's her choice, just ride it out, maybe she'll find something nicer, though again, it's not the worst I've heard.

Well since this is not your kid it really is not up to you. She must really like that name, it is getting more common that people name their kids very different name. I agree with you about the nick name, maybe she don't want one. Who knows maybe she will change her mind when she actually see's baby and think baby don't look a October

Thats funny. When I was a little girl, I really wanted to name my child "October" "toby" for short. I think it is still cute.

Don't think you should tell her it's hideous, maybe just say it's a name you wouldn't choose and also tell her to make sure she's 100% she won't go off it as it is an unusual name. I mentioned a name i liked to my mum and she said it was awful, which did hurt me a bit (was dominic by the way which i don't think is awful but she's put me off it now).

My adopted younger sister is named Alaska. Somehow people get used to odd names.

Maybe name her October Pilar and call her Opie for short (O.P.). Or October Brielle and nn = Obie.
