Depends on where you live I guess. Here in my town firefighters are very well paid, with good benefits.

It's not easy, but I do it for the love of the job and the people in my community. I have a second job as a duct installer for a local HVAC company. Some of the guys I work with drive for FedEx, work at a deli, work for lawn companies, construction, merchandising, etc.

Even though the pay sucks, we love our job and what we do. The community takes care of us in other ways. The provide us with part time jobs that work around our fire job schedule and they understand if we ran all night or have to work overtime. They also give us discounts on goods and services. It all balances out in the end and we make it work!

I have 2 side jobs. I am not a firefighter, but an EMT and the pay is about the same............sucky. Like others, we do it, because we care.

It REALLY depends on the are you work in...some place its all they need...other they need multiple jobs...usually something like doing yard work, odd jobs, anything you can pick up on the side...i know a few guys that own their own lawn care companies
