i am a sociology major and interested in doing something with children.i want to know what advice someone can give me on looking for a volunteer work.

I suggest that you contact your local volunteer center. They specialize in finding you some specific volunteer opportunities in your area of interest. Most opportunities are one-time or short-term, but volunteer centers also can connect you with hundreds of other non-profit agencies in your community.
