The job market is looking good in the Houston Area. I would avoid moving into HISD, what is left of North Forest ISD, Conroe ISD, Alief ISD, or Cy-Fair ISD.
There are many great areas to live in and to raise children. There are many good school districts to choose from. If you want to get a good size house (with some extras) look West. They are getting ready to add a huge section to my subdivision (Raintree Village, in the Katy area) and they are getting ready to open a brand new elementary school as well. There are a lot of kids of all ages everywhere you go! This would be a great area for you and your family.

I would say the job market is pretty good. Real estate is pretty cheap. I don't know much about adopting children here. As far as it being a good place to raise a family, like every large city it has it's problem areas. I would recommend looking into the suburbs. They are cheaper but you may have to commute. You could look into areas like Sugarland, The Woodlands, Katy, Cypress, Clear Lake, Friendswood and Pearland.

If you really have your heart set on something more inner city, the Rice Village area is nice and a little further out the Galleria area is nice, but both can get a little expensive.

Or for something in between Northwest Houston or the Memorial area (west Houston)

Basically just stay West of I-45 ;)

One thing you have to remember is that Houston is spread out over a extremely large area. It is not uncommon for your travel time to be over an hour. Houston's traffic is Bad. There is very little mass transit. If you are coming here is July be prepared to have terrible humidity. Be prepared for huge power bills during the summer.($200- $400 plus during the summer months) It is pretty cheap for housing but the apartment living is in a lot of up unrest, at the present. I live in The Woodlands but I do have a hour commute most every day, to downtown area. I'd look for housing close to your husbands work place, and if you have children check the school districts. Some district fall far below the national standards. Good Luck

Houston can be a good place to live and raise a family if you move to the right part. Someone earlier said, West of I-45. I'd go further than that and say west of Highway 249 (although the Champions area is nice), and north of the Westpark Tollway (but stay off Westheimer).

There are some nice neighborhoods inside Loop 610 as well (West U, the Med Center, around Rice University). I live in an area called Memorial, and it is very homey and well kept up.

The job market is strong here, but not across the board. For example, there is not a strong IT market here. Lots of engineering, accounting, and legal jobs though.

I have friends who recently adopted, and the wait in Harris County (Houston is mostly within the confines of Harris County) was a few years, so they went to Fort Bend County. Just be wary of some of the representatives down there.

Casey V said Houston is dirty and ugly. That's not entirely true. Houston made a serious mistake in not using city planners, so they have some strange areas. As an overall, I'm not a big fan, but many neighborhoods chose something called "deed restriction" to institute their own form of zoning. So there are beautiful and nice neighborhoods. The real estate here is the best deal. I came from California, and Houston is roughly 50% of Ca.

There are some ugly areas, especially where the property owners in commercial areas are making no effort to beautify or maintain their areas. Business signs are often garish and old and too many of them. And Houston does a terrible, terrible job with the streets. Even when they fix them, the jobs are so poorly done it's no help! In nicer areas the streets are new, cement, and well done.
Houston seems to be the "City of Brick." I have never seen so many brick structures in my life. There are lots of colors of brick I have never seen, either. Everything from yellow to a brown you'd call purple. There are also more townhouses here than I've ever seen. Most very beautifully done.
Rents are a steal. People are more polite here than in Ca. Friendlier, too.

Houston is a great place to live, job market is good, stay in the good parts of town and you'll be fine. De Pelchin Childrens' Home has kids available for adoption. There's always lots to do. Zoo, Childrens' Museum, Hermann Park. Galveston, Kemah and Clear Lake are close by with lots to do. Day trips to the hill country are great. It's hot here, so water sports are the thing to do.

I like Houston...I've called it home since 1990.

Why? I'm not sure. I'm a native Texan but spent most of my life along I-35. Lived in San Antonio...had family in Dallas..went to college in Austin, then when I graduated, my first job was in Laredo. So, yeah, I stayed along I-35 and rarely considered Houston. I'd only been here something like 4 times in my life. i was recruited here in 1990 and I instantly fell in love with Houston.

The humidity took some getting used to...and frankly, you never get used to it, but you do learn what to expect and when to expect it. The same applies to thunderstorm season in the Spring...the rainy summer months...and also the Texans season....hahahahahahaha.

Go Rockets

I mainly love Houston because it isn't Dallas.

I moved to Katy (25 miles of Houston) in 10/2006. I think it is a great place to raise a family. I'd highly recommend living in a nice suburb where schools are better and less crime.
