Because our dogs are house dogs they've obtained a vast 'vocab'. The crew I have now understands us better than we understand them.... not the brightest bulbs on the tree. Certain words we began spelling such as O U T. This was to keep them from jumping up and acting wild thinking they were going to be taken out before we finished minor details. But because of repetition even these dummies associated it with outdoors and learned to 'spell' such words. I have had much brighter dogs in the past who could easily get their point across..very vocal dogs who used both sound and body language to communicate. These were all the same breed and raised no differently. Some animals just have it and others don't. Just like the human brain. And ,of course, time spent with them makes a difference but your animal won't be a Lassie without a good amount of gray matter ( brain matter) to begin with.

Yes for sure. I have had dogs and cats since i was a child and we have always spoken to our animals a lot. Over time they have learned a certain amount of human lanquage.
I had one cat from a kitten which not only understood a fair amount but actually learned to speak about six words in english which many other people heard clearly for themselves.

I have a cat, he seems to understand what he wants to.

he understands when I say NO.

but the strangest thing was the other night I said he could only go out if he jingled the keys loud that were in the lock in the door. I said it a few times and then he did it and really loud. was quite strange.

I didn't let him out though. arn't I mean?

MOST DEFINATELY YES! How do think they can obey us also the only difference they have is THEY DONT have a voice box to answer us. They say that the senses of a dog is far better sometimes than our senses. My Dog kept beside me when my mother took very seriously ill and she actually died the night my dog was trying to tell me to get off to the hospital. So there!!

Of course. We can train them to understand certain words and phrases. Our dog understands many phrases and words and often anticipates us by our hand signals and body language. She understands her own and our routines too. She is a very very clever girl!
She evens understands how to sit and shake hands when I tell her to in Japanese.

Its known as sound association, just as we do with them. If your pet growls/spits you know they are upset/angry, they yelp means in pain or stressed and bark/meow etc means happy, excited.

Just like our actions/reactions tell them allot, they read body language, facial expressions, voice tones, and one thing we cannot do is sense your heart beat. This all enabling them to work out your emotional state and react accordingly in cases comfort you by showing affection, fuss over you, or if your scared/nervous they will become tense and alert to the surrounding.

Words to them are like barks/meows to us, we use our ears to work out the tone/growl/hiss and our eye's to check out the body language. So if u ask ur dog to sit, that's just a sound to him not a word but as time passes, sound association comes into play and they know that sound means I've to do this.

Hope this helps u understand a little more about our lovely little friends.

Yes. I don't think dogs and cats can understand language per se, but they can pick up on our tone and body language. In fact, I think they can pick up on signals we don't know we're sending.

For example, if you're walking your dog and someone you don't like comes up to you, the dog senses your subtle reaction and starts barking at that person. Maybe you tensed up or changed your gait slightly, the dog can pick up on that.

Animals do understand you, if I give my dog's a command - they know what I mean and do it. So they must be able to understand otherwise they would'nt.
