Notoriously difficult to prevent. I have them everywhere. The only solution to rid them completely is to stay up all night looking for them and block up EVERY single tiny hole in your house. However, this is a bit extreme so perhaps the easiest thing is to use slug pellets in particular areas and move the dogs bowl to a different place. You will probably find that if you have a problem with slugs, so will your neighbours. If they say they haven't, they are fibbing!

yes they are a best, here is something you could try if you wish , it works. Sink small dishes about 25mm (1 in) or more deep into ground and fill them with watered down beer or milk the slugs are attracted to the beer or milk so they fall in and drown. also to protect your plants and crops lay some soot, wood ash or lime , they can´t slide over these things as it´s not smooth enough for them . just make sure you not lay this to close to the plant stems. they hide through the day in moist places like under stones bricks flower pots or garden litter , so if you have lots of these thing lying around then try to move them into your garden shed. another way of draping them is with 1/2 an orange/grapefruit upturned , then pop them into a bucket with soap water and drown them .Hope this helps with your problem ,also used coffee grounds they don´t like . So many ways to try I´m sure 1 will work

I tried the beer in shallow containers - my dog thought everyday was his birthday until I discovered why the beer was "evaporating" so quickly!!! Whatever you do, don't use slug pellets - they are attractive to some dogs who die a horrible death after ingesting them
Anyway - this site has some useful suggestions:
I believe the use of copper has proved effective.

Salt kills them. Line your property in salt and when they cross, they die. I am not sure how to prevent them, not sure you can.
