The Nile overflowed its banks yearly due to the large amount of rainfall at its source increasing the flow.

The Egyptians relied on this annual flooding to irrigate the fields that stood next to the Nile in a narrow strip (and still do). The water was distributed to the fields by a quite sophisticated network of irrigation channels.

The Nile drains a large area of Africa to the south of Egypt. Each spring, snowmelt swells the tributaries of the Nile, with the maximum flow moving gradually northward, reaching upper Egypt early in the summer. In ancient times, there was a "nilometer" on an island in the river -- when the high water began to recede, experts reported to the government how high the annual floods would be at downstream locations. This information made it possible for downstream farmers to plan and for the tax officials to estimate what tax revenues would be. The floods rarely failed. During the floods, those living in the path of the water typically had to seek higher ground at the edge of the floodplain. When they returned, they would plant -- and the abundance of their crops was largely due to the silt that the floods deposited on their lands. All of this was true up to the construction of the Aswan dam. Now the water -- and the silt -- are trapped behind the dam.

You'd have to start with an encyclopedia to research the reason why the Nile floods. As for the rest of your questions, James Burke has something to say about it in his book and series 'Connections'. I think the book is out of print, but there are usually several copies available on eBay at any given time. In fact, the 'Connections 1' DVD set is up for auction right now, and due to end on Thursday. Search 'james burke connections', so that you don't get the wrong items. Good luck!
