it sounds like you kow a little bit about it because you know there is a difference. Obsean is basically right, you should charge R-22 with gas and 410a as a liquid.
The reason is that the system usually needs to be running while charging. R-22 charged as a liquid can overcome the evaporator and slug the compressor.
The trouble is, if you have a 410a system and it leaked, the manufacturer recommends removing all of the system charge and refilling with all new as a liquid. The reason is that 410a is a blend and the blended refrigerants leak at a different rate.
You should not "top off" a system if you know that it has a leak, and never vent refrigerant to the atmosphere.

R-22 GAS when running .. Liquid when not running.. Liquid comes out much fastest. From a cold start push low side gauge to 118 psi. start unit let run for 10 min then top of between around 75 psi. Never about 80. of course if you have a dirt a coil, dirty filter, or a txv then you will not be able to achieve these numbers keep high side around 250 to 260. Make sure condenser coil is clean..

410a is charge by liquid only with unit in off position low side between 118-130 psi.

Although freon is a gas when you buy it it is in a liquid form, when charging the unit the liquid changes to the gaseous state and will become quite cold, thats the function of the freon in the unit, expansion of the liquid to a gas produces cold.

via calling a authorized HVAC technician. in case you attempt to do it your self, you would be violating the regulation, and to boot, that's rather difficult to discover actual freon on the open industry. you ought to have a license to purchase it and you ought to maintain up with how plenty is used etc. And once you're caught letting it out into the ambience, you will get arrested. Hell, reckoning on the fee, it would be extra useful to purely purchase a clean air conditioner. Plus this is Fall, you would be able to get an amazing purchase on one.

If it is R-22, you add as a gas only unless you know what you're doing.
If your unit uses R-410a, charge as a liquid.
