We know that all governments are corrupt and influenced by private interests to a greater or lesser degree. So why do we just sit back and take it? Are we really so appathetic and lazy that we wont do anything about it?

it's a sad predicament i suppose. of course we shouldn't be made to put up with such bull crap. the thing is though, is that in britain, it seems as if it is a crime to speak out against the government, so much so that it often leads to arrest. it's a pity though that governments throughout the world assume that because they represent the country, they assume they represent the best interests of the people, when in large they don't. they never have done and they never will. people power will always win out in the end. we ought to speak out more often and condemn the crap that politicians often spout out. they can talk the talk but they can't walk the walk. therefore, power to the people!

You're right, however it's all or most, political party's that are corrupt and influenced by private interests, so we just vote for the one whose private interests lie nearer to our own. Like the best of a bad bunch unfortunately

What are we going to do? I think the system works quite well. If we dislike what our government is doing we don't re-elect them. That we let them get away with corruption is basically because we don't care, as long as they keep fine in areas people are actually concerned about.
So the government may be bad in those areas as well, but people protest and spark political debate, but what more do you expect us to do every time we get a bad government.

Vive la revolution? I think you'll agree that'd do more harm than good. We have a nice stable country here at the moment.

Yes, we enjoy our lifestyles too much to worry about the future but what people don't realize is American norm is not the norm in other places. They think nothing can happen to us we're American but just take a look back at history, All major civilizations, imperialistic I should add, have risen and fallen. When a society reaches its fullest potential it will begin to descend. Can't stay on top forever especially when you are making enemies left and right

Yeah mostly - Plus if we revolted, all we'd get is a bunch of people going "right what do we do now?"

I really think it is because we feel powerless, and are made to feel powerless from the time we were young, primarily because our parents didn't have or at least attempt to have any power.
Hopelessness leads to apathy, that is my guess.
