Hon, there is no standard. I personally think any man who wants to spend 2 months salary on a ring is a moron who needs an education in money matters. I am recently engaged and my fiance let me pick the ring myself. It is a round 3/8 carat diamond solitaire and was right at $1000 and it is beautiful and I love it.
The amount of money you spend is not important and the size of the ring is not important. What is important is that she likes the ring. I'm personally very grateful that I got to pick mine myself, and I'm sure there are lots of ladies in the same boat as me. Get a starter ring. Then several years from now, surprise her on an anniversary by getting her a bigger one or getting accents to add to her existing ring.

There is no standard, seriously. It is the thought that counts, not the amount that you spend. Especially, when you are just starting out. Buy what you can afford. Later, in life, after 20 years of marriage and more stability, surprise her with something bigger.

I heard that it is 1 months salary.I think in my heart if i loved someone it wouldn't matter the cost of the ring.It is what the man picks, what he thinks u would like, a gift from his heart.Down the road when many anniversaries pass, then he may surprise her with a special ring..Pam

If your woman requires you to spend all your money on a damned ring that will do nothing but sit on her finger, then you need to find a new woman. You know what I asked my husband to get me? Some beef jerky. I would have been PISSED if he bought me some expensive ring that we could have used the money for other, more important things.

That sounds about right, but the truth is what you are comfortable in paying, not what society says.
