It is the formula determined to rate a team's strength of schedule. 25% is your winning percentage. 50% is the winning percentage of the teams you played. the remaining 25% is the winning percentage of the teams those teams played. It is not the ranking used to determine the teams, but the value place on it by the committe is huge.

It stands for Ratings Percentage Index. They use it in college basketball to sort through teams that have a chance to get into the NCAA tournament. However, it isnt really a factor that experts use to place teams in the tournament. That is a myth. It just sorts the teams.
