I think it stems from a combination of fear and misguided belief. These people believe strongly in their convictions, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The trouble comes in when they pick and choose for themselves which parts of the bible should be followed to the letter and which parts they can let slide. Homosexuality (for example) is hard to understand for some people. Toss religious beliefs into the mix and it becomes combustable. They don't understand why or how two people of the same sex could have a romantic love for one another and so they begin to for it. It's almost like a virus to them, they feel that if they get too close they may catch it. so they have to fight it. Then they try to argue it and I think that this is the point where the bible plays a major role. When they argue the matter, I believe they begin to see how flawed their logic is and often find it impossible to come up with an intelligent reason for hating/disliking gays. So they turn to the bible, because you can argue with man, but you just can't argue with God. So, basically, I think the bible is used as a shield. They use it to protect themselves from what they are unwilling to understand.

Because some people can't handle questions like that so they hide behind the bible. I have done a lot of research on people who have near death experiences and those who come back have the same message....Love your fellow man.

Because you used the word "always" you have lumped yourself in a catagory of assuming "all" people do this. I have never referred to the bible to question someone's sexuality. I could really care less if someone is gay or hetro or likes sheep. Just as long as they are respectful of me.

I think it's because christains seem to be the biggest opponents to homosexuality, bisexuality, and anything else "sinful" in their view. It's not all religious people, just the outspoken ones.
