Its a myth. Many women start taking the pill when they are in a steady relationship and studies suggest that it the fact that women (and men) are comfortable in this relationship, and they often tend to eat more.

If you are truly concerned about weight gain there is a pill on the market called Yasmin which is classified as weight netural and some women will even experience a small weight loss (say 1-2kgs per 6 months). Ask your doctor for a prescription.

But is definately a myth that the pill causes weight gain, and women have been blaming the pill for everything for years..

I've gained more weight with Depo Provera shots than I did on the pill. With the Depo I gained 25 pounds in 6 months. If you take the pill and notice a weight gain, talk to your doctor about it and see if they can suggest a different brand or different dosage. Not all birth control pills are the same.

I have been on the pill for about 4 years now because of periods, when i started taking them i was 13 years old and weighed 126 pounds, i was 5 foot and 1 inch. I am 17, almost 18 now. I am five foot seven inches tall, and i weigh 140 pounds, which is healthy, and im curvy to begin with. I recently switched to YAZ which gives you 4 day periods, and my weight fluctuates about 6 pounds every time i step on the scale. I still wear a size 4-5 in pants, so i am happy.

I've been on & off it many times over two decades. Each time, I found that I gained approximately 5 lbs. When I stopped taking it, I lost the weight.

Of course, not taking it could cause a substantial weight gain....if you know what I mean! ;)
