First you need an agent. Choose a reputable agency and find out what their submission requirements are. The large publishing houses will not accept manuscripts directly from authors. Never, ever pay money to an agent or a publisher. Legitimate agents never ask for money.

Publishing your own work is not something I would ever reccomend. Editing, proof reading, graphic design, printing, promotion etc are jobs best left to the professionals. The costs are huge, and unless you can pull some strings somewhere the media are not going to be interested. There are many companies who offer this service, but it is a rare day when a self published book makes it to the best sellers list. Self publishing companies are there to make money. They will tell you that Mark Twain was self published... but he wrote at a time when the publishing world was very different to what it is now.

It is a highly competitive field, so your work need to be original, preferably ground breaking. But if it is good enough your work will generate its own market. Self publishing is known as 'vanity' publishing for good reasons. Anyone with the cash can publish their own book. As a published author I could do the same with books I have had turned down, but I would never do it.

Good luck, I hope you have a best seller there!

I would HIGHLY recommend self-publishing. You can get your book into the marketplace quickly and easily with as much control over everything as you'd like. I have 2 books out, available thru Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, Borders, etc and I self-published for under $500.00

When the sells starts other publishers will seek you out instead of the other way around, trust me on this one.

You should look at the literary market place or writer's digest annual yearbook to find either an agent or a book publisher. Good luck.

If your book is written as well as your question, I'd recommend you worry more about editing/revising/finishing it first before you even think of finding a publisher. Believe me, an editor or agent won't look twice when your first sentence(s) are chock full of grammatical errors.
