Behind the photographs of space, or do they darken the background to bring out the colors of the light?

They're beautiful!

Some photographs of space are over-exposed intentionally because the objects are dull when photographed.

In some areas of space there is a total absence of any light source, so yes, it is that black.

The high quality pictures that you see of other galaxies and celestial objects are taken from space to avoid interference from the earth's atmosphere. That's why most observatories are high up on mountains so that can avoid as much as possible but most are taken from satellites in orbit.

Now depending on the picture and the distance of the object desires depend on what they do to the image captured. At times they might darken the black to bring out the faded light in the black ground to be a more desirable shot. But when capturing a gas cloud or a cluster of stars they rarely do much to the picture and try to keep it as original as possible to keep accuracy. Although, they might do some touch ups. But yes, space and the whole universe in general is beautiful.

EDIT: Also, space is mostly empty. There is not a lot of light at all in space and things are vastly spread apart. Space is very dark. So yes, space for the most part is just that black. (There also is a of random little objects floating around so, either there just isn't anything there or there is something blocking the very little light showing.)

I hope that helps!

It is that dark because there is no atmosphere to give a scattering effect of the star light.
