a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God.”

1. The wind does not have a mouth, and thus can't whistle. This is a representation of a personification. 2. A simile uses the word like or as. Since she is "like" a cheetah, this is an example of a simile. 3. A metaphor compares two unrelated objects to make a exaggerated point. A metaphor and a simile are actually very similar, but again, you must look for the like or as in a simile. Metaphors are a little more subtle. Sentence three shows a metaphoric comparison of a football player and a freight train.

Yes, a simile is when you use like or as (i.e. You smell like the rain). A metaphor is using a situation that is comparable to what your talking about as a way to better explain it. Like, when girls have coming out balls the metaphor of them being catepillars and turning into butterflies is an often used metaphor.

Everyone is giving you partial answers:

A metaphor is a comparison between to things by way of a symbolic bridge. "A crescent moon is God's thumbnail hitching a ride to the nearest star." This is a metaphor, because the connection between the two things being compared (crescent moon and God's thumbnail) is not literal, but rather symbolic. Metaphors do not use the words "like" or "as" in their descriptions.

A simile is a metaphor that uses "like" or "as.": "The crescent moon scraped across the night sky like a fingernail on a chalkboard." The comparison between "crescent moon" and "fingernail" is linked by the word "like."

A metaphor would be a more direct comparison. For instance...

The onion dome of the State Capitol is very big.

The term "Onion dome" describes the dome of the capitol building, by comparison to the shape of an onion.

i hate poetry so it took me forever to figure this one out. but a metaphor is a figure of speech that says one thing is another, example " the sun is a flower"
and a simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things using the words "like" or "as" example " the sun is like a flower"
