i am asking because it stopped working and the garage i took it to replaced it (or so he says with a second hand one)but that has stopped working well it is intermittent and i am wondering whether he has just cleaned it up and ripped me off.

Depends on the age. Most were on the gearbox near the differential, but the newer ones used an ABS sensor on the nearside front hub (even if it doesn't have ABS).

There are 2 sensors fitted to most Rover's 1 fitted to the rear of the gearbox and 1 fitted at the NSF cv joint, which when fitted with ABS, this also acts as a sensor for ABS control
