the term "accelerated filers" means. It seems like some sort of category based on company size. Is that what it is? What does accelerated mean? Why are there "accelerated filers"? Are there "regular" filers?

You're right. Accelerated filers are "U.S. companies that have equity market capitalization over $75 million and have filed an annual report with the SEC". The word "accelerated" means "to speed up". Accelerated filers are designated from micro-cap companies that do not have the financial capital to implement the requirements of Sox. You could, in essence, call those companies under $75 million in market cap the "regular" filers. Hope that helps.
