It is possible, though I have found it not to be a common career.

When I did an engineering internship in a major manufacturer back in the early '90's, they had a statistician on staff. Now that would be ONE statistician for the entire campus in MD.

Now in my current position (fast forward 15 years later), we are heavily six sigma oriented. We do have staff "Master Black Belts" whose job is to educate the rest of us or help us with projects. The MBB's...at least the ones I know...are heavily into stats. Use of six sigma is pretty prevalent at US companies today - but not all are "math oriented"...in other words, you can have six sigma at a company that only does business-type projects and you won't see too many stats there. But there are quite a few who are heavily into stats. So this route is one to research - just my recommendation.
