It's not just a southern issue. racism is all over America. The racism found in the rural midwest is real and pervasive.

Because they were the ones who fought to keep slaves and lost them unwillingly, and household racism of the strong variety will pass down from generation to generation.

I think he probably meant to ask why it was so prominent in the South, I doubt he was trying to say they're the only place where there is racism. Stop nitpicking people.

Racism is a false pride, like sexism, nationalism, and religious intolerance. It's what those with low
self-esteem, (self-love, self-worth, self-respect),
use to compensate for that lack.
Notice is said isms. Not real pride in who one is.
It is also used as an excuse for fears like not having enough to eat and drink, And having jobs, and worrying about the future. Which we are told
not to worry about. As our Creator provides these things through Earth Mother on a daily
basis.

racism is a universal issue.

Immaturity and false pride lead to opinions such as:
My complexion is better than yours
My culture is more civilized than yours
My language is more universal than yours
My God is stronger than yours
My race is superior to yours.

With growing globalization, people will get exposed to diverse cultures and will end up developing tolerance and respect for differences.

Go ask someone in Harlem the same question....racism is everywhere. I'll be glad when the races are so inter mingled, that no one even remembers the word racism.

They used to have slaves way back when and they still think of black people as inferior. The black people still have bitterness toward the white people too. The South has not yet learned to let go of their past.
