I'm probably going to have my car towed to have it fixed. How much does a tow normally cost that is only about a mile and it is just a chevy cavalier? This a rural area not a large city if that has anything to do with the price.

Tow rates are regulated by local governments. A local tow truck driver will give you a good idea. At a minimum - $100.

AAA will give you one tow for free to a service center of your choice.

There are a lot of variables in the towing industry.

Prices fluctuate depending on these variables. Which in your case can include the issue with the vehicle hence if it was involved in an accident it may take more time to load the vehicle which may turn into the tow costing more money.

In the long run most towing companies charge a hook up fee that can range from $50 to $200 depending on the vehicle size typically. Your is a smaller vehicle so count on the lower side hook up fee. Then there is a mileage fee which can range from $2 to $5 dollars. Then there are the other fees. Which may include a gas surcharge, credit card processing, sometimes there is a labor charge, plus tolls if needed.

So in your case, if the towing company treats you right, your towing service should cost between 60-100 dollars or so and that should include everything.

I just (2/2/2014) got a tow from Raleigh to Cary, NC (about 12 miles). I called two places: both said $85. I also gave the driver a $5 tip.

I picked Cricket Towing in Cary, because I know they've been in business forever. They used a shiney, new-looking flatbed truck, got there quickly (~1 hour), and seemed very professional.

It was Sunday evening during the Superbowl, but they said the cost would be the same Sunday evening or Monday morning. (But the Superbowl wasn't much of a game to miss this year.)

The tow itself should cost roughly $100-160. Also, some companies also have a surcharge for mileage of the tow. So if they had to tow it to their lot which was far from where your car was, you might see another $50 on the bill. Also, most places charge a DAILY FEE for storage of your vehicle in the lot since you haven't come to retrieve your vehicle. So you should call to see if there's a daily storage fee for your vehicle. If there is, I highly recommend you ask friends/family for money and get it out tomorrow and just try to get by until you get paid on Friday. Good luck.

My boyfriend got in accident Tuesday night. They called local tow company.
The car was totaled, but he was fine. Called the tow company next day to see how much owed and was told $810. For a 3.8 mile tow! Unbelievable! $250 because was an emergency call. $150 because was after hours. $150 for cleanup and prep of tow truck for next pickup. $125 for load & unload. $35 for mileage. $50 for administrative fee. And i cant remember what the othr $50 was for. Oh, and $35 per day the vehicle was left at the tow place. Steves Tow in Constantine, MI. Dont ever use them if you dont have to.

What people need to realize.... For one I am just starting a new Tow company here in NJ. It is not cheap to keep a tow truck legal. Just my liability insurance is just under $7, 000 a year. Then on top of that I have 120 a month for business insurance. I have a monthly bill of $1,000 a month. Not including my personal bills. So in most cases if an honest tow truck driver/company he is not trying to rip you off, but he needs to cover his cost to keep truck on road, legally and maintenance wise plus be able to give himself a fair paycheck. 2013 Illinois. 2-mile tow on a flatbed. $190.00 Terrible cost, but not too far from average. Even at $5- $10 per mile, it was a rip-off. What can you do? Sunday, Holiday weekend. Only tow available.
